By: Tony and Holly Nester of Ancient Pathways

With winter upon us, here are a few tips to keep in mind when exploring the wilds in winter.

1. Always leave a travel plan with someone before heading out on the trail or the road.

2. Avoid wearing cotton clothing at all costs! Cotton is the single worst material to wear in the outdoors during the winter because, when wet, it will rob your body of heat faster than if you were naked! Instead, choose fabrics such as wool, fleece, polyester, polypropylene, or silk which will continue to insulate even if they get soaked.

3. Carry three sources of fire on you at all times. Fire=Life in the winter wilderness so always have the means of making it. I like to carry a lighter, Windproof Matches, and a magnesium spark-rod. Also, a film canister containing cotton balls smeared with Vaseline will provide you with a superior wet-weather firestarter. Hand Warmers
4. Stock your vehicle with a
blanket, winter coat, Sports Bars, Snickers bars and Energy Gels go along way towards adding some fuel to your internal furnace so stow some in your glove box for the season.

5. Finally, remember the most important tip of all is to Respect the Season. Winter can be unforgiving if you fail to prepare. Using that survival tool between your ears and being prepared before you leave the front door of your house will enable you to enjoy the winter wonderland.

So have a great holiday season and enjoy the winter!
